About this piece

Soft pink with bold palm leaves — the pink ground is warm and even, and the palm shapes emerge from it where the wax held the colour back. The leaves are generous in scale, sitting prominently across the cloth rather than as a background texture.

The palm leaf outlines were applied in wax before the pink dye went on. Where the wax was thicker, the leaf edges are clean; where it thinned at the tips, the pink crept slightly inward — those fine gradations at the leaf points are what give each one its character.
