About this piece
Blue oval shapes across white cotton — the ovals sit cleanly against the white ground, the blue is a clear and even mid-tone, and the overall pattern has a balanced, unhurried quality. As a night gown design it's straightforward and comfortable without being plain.
The interior of each oval was protected by wax while the blue settled into the cotton around it. That simple reversal — dye everywhere the wax wasn't — is the whole logic of batik, and in a clean design like this one it's most legible. The white ovals and the blue ground are two versions of the same cloth.
