About this piece

Bright yellow with bold palm leaf shapes — the yellow ground is warm and open, and the palm leaves sit across it as white shapes where the wax held the fabric back from the dye. In yellow, the palms read with a sunshine energy that the darker-ground versions don't have.

The leaves fan outward at different angles across the cloth, and no two are positioned the same way — some lean left, some reach upward, some overlap slightly at the edges. The arrangement was placed by hand and that looseness is part of what makes the design work on a full-length kaftan.
