About this piece
Pink zig zag lines running the full length of the night gown — the pattern moves in sharp, repeating angles that give the cloth a directional energy without restlessness. The pink is warm and clear, and the white ground between the zig zag lines keeps the design feeling open.
The zig zag is one of the more demanding batik patterns to execute cleanly — each angle has to turn sharply and the line has to resume without pause. Where it held perfectly, the angle is crisp. Where the wax gave fractionally at the turn, the pink crept in just a little. Both are visible; both are right.
