About this piece

Purple blocks across white cotton — rich and slightly regal, the purple sits in the deeper part of the spectrum, closer to aubergine than lavender. The block shapes give it structure without stiffness.

The wax holds the white ground between each block while the purple saturates around it. In places where the wax was applied thicker, the edge is clean; where it thinned, the purple crept slightly under — those fine, irregular borders are the signature of the batik tjanting tool moving by hand.
