About this piece

Purple oval shapes across white cotton — the purple is deep and saturated, and the ovals float across the cloth with a calm regularity that keeps the pattern from feeling dense. There's a lot of white between the shapes, which gives the purple room to breathe.

The oval is one of the more forgiving batik shapes to draw — the curves flow naturally with the wrist movement — and yet each one here is slightly different. Same hand, same session, and still no two are identical. That's what batik does.
