About this piece

Diamond shapes in deep red across white cotton — precise in intention, slightly imprecise in execution, which is exactly right for batik. The red is rich and dense, the diamonds sit in neat rows that the eye can follow across the full length of the kaftan.

Each diamond was outlined in wax before the dye went on. At the pointed corners where the wax lines meet, the dye sometimes crept slightly inward — not enough to distort the shape, just enough to give the edges their hand-drawn softness.
