About this piece
Green shading into black — the green is brightest at one end of the night gown and the colour deepens progressively through the length until it reaches near-black at the hem. The gradient is long and slow, giving the piece a visual weight that settles toward the ground.
Shaded batik like this is built through sequential dyeing — the cloth goes into progressively darker baths, with sections being protected between each pass. The result is a gradient that has genuine depth rather than the flat fade of a dip-dye, because each tonal change happened to the same fibres.
