About this piece
Green and yellow blocks together — the green is earthy, the yellow is bright, and the alternating arrangement between them gives the design a lively, tropical energy. As a night gown it works because the two colours are balanced well — neither overpowers the other.
Each colour was applied separately through the wax-resist process, the two tones kept distinct by the boundaries between them. The clean separations at the block edges reflect careful staging of the dye passes, giving the design a precision that the more organic batik patterns don't have.
