How to Wash & Care for Hand Dyed Batik Cotton
Share
Hand dyed batik cotton is wonderfully low-maintenance — but a few simple habits keep the colours vivid and the fabric soft for years. Here’s everything you need to know to care for your cotton kaftans and cotton night gowns.
The first few washes
Because batik is genuinely hand dyed, deep and dark colours may release a little excess dye at first. For the first two or three washes, wash dark colours separately in cold or normal water. This is completely normal for real hand-dyed fabric and settles down quickly.
Everyday washing
After that, care is effortless — every piece is machine washable and machine-dry safe. A few tips to keep it at its best:
- Turn the garment inside out to protect the print.
- Use a mild detergent and a normal cycle.
- Avoid harsh bleach, which can affect any dyed fabric.
Drying
Dry in the shade (or use a dryer). Like all dyed textiles, batik colours stay richest when kept out of long, harsh direct sun.
Ironing
Pure cotton presses beautifully. A warm-to-hot iron brings back a crisp, fresh finish whenever you like.
Why batik behaves a little differently
Batik is made entirely by hand — hot wax is applied by hand, the cotton is dyed, then the wax is removed. That means slight variations in pattern and tone from piece to piece are part of the craft, not flaws. Every item is also 100% non-transparent pure cotton, so it stays comfortable and opaque wash after wash.
Quick care checklist
- First 2–3 washes: dark colours separately.
- Machine wash, inside out, mild detergent, no bleach.
- Dry in shade or dryer.
- Warm-to-hot iron as needed.
